Open Bridle: The Open bridle is the most common type seen in harness racing. It allows the horse to see in all directions. It is generally thought to suit the majority of horses.This model can also be converted to a closed bridle with the addition of blinds and some minor adjustments. It also has attachments for headcheck.
Headcheck: The Headcheck (sometimes referred to as the "Check Rein") fits from the centre of the saddle and up the horse's top line. It then divides into two straps. Each strap goes through a special loop on the harness bridle, and runs down the horse's face, finally fastening to the overcheck bit or chin strap. The purpose of a headcheck is to set the horse's head carriage at the optimal height for racing to give his best performance, be easy to control and not impede his breathing.This model is made from 13mm (1/2") synthetic strapping and features stainless steel fittings. The front is adjustable, while the back part connects to the saddle with a stainless steel snap hook.
Buxton: Sometimes referred to as a "breastcollar", breastplates are designed to prevent the harness saddle from slipping backwards.The Buxton breastplate is the most commonly seen in modern harness racing, and named after Ohio-based trainer Dick Buxton, who was the first to use this design on Standardbreds in the early 1960's.This model is lined with a PVC padding, for both extra comfort and prevention from galling. This breastplate is supplied as standard in most Zilco Racing Harness Sets.
Clip on Traces: These traces are suitable for use when a Buxton style breastplate is used as an alternative to the traditional breastplate with integrated traces.The stainless steel snap hooks attach to the dee on the harness saddle, and attach to hooks on the sulky shaft at the other end. There are multiple settings to ensure the correct fit.
Girth: This 50mm (2") wide girth is made from Zilco sealed strapping and features stainless steel fittings for strength and ease of cleaning. Fully lined with anti-gall PVC waffle for comfort, it also includes a breastplate/martingale clip and loops for keeping a false belly band in place if one is used.Standard(65cm/26")Measurements taken from end of buckle to end of buckle.Black
Shaft Cups & Straps: Made from Zilco sealed strapping with moulded cups, these straps attach to the saddle dee. The ends of the sulky shafts sit inside the cups to prevent the sulky from moving too far forward.There is generous adjustment in the straps to allow the sulky to be positioned closer or further back from the horse as required.Standard - 42cm maximum length
Shaft Loops: Made from heavy PVC tubing with a sturdy Zilco sealed strapping core and stainless steel buckles. Designed for use with any Zilco Shaft Loop saddle, these loops buckle to the backband of the saddle and support the sulky shafts.Standard Size - 6cm internal diameter
Tiedowns: Tiedowns are used with Shaft Loop style saddles. Sometimes referred to as "safety straps", they thread through the loop on the girth buckle, and are then wound around the sulky shafts and buckled tightly to keep them securely fastened to the harness.Standard (107cm/42")
Reins (4 Loops) : Zilco harness racing reins. This model is made from plain material and features 4 sewn (fixed) hand loops. The buckle ends include a wire stay for added strength and security.4.4 metres long
Crupper (NZ Style) : Cruppers are designed to prevent the harness saddle from slipping forward.This model connects to the harness saddle with a stainless steel trigger snap, and has a buckle at the dock end for easy fitting & removal to the horse. The dock itself is mouldable to suit any tail set and includes a buckle for attaching the rear spreader style hopple carry strap if used.
